"crucified christ". Crucified Christ made of carved boxwood. Alive, and three-nailed, head slightly turned and raised to the left, curly hair. Hole in the upper part of the head, possibly wearing a crown of thorns. His mouth is slightly open, revealing his teeth. The cloth of purity, tied with a rope, is knotted on the right.
The cross, made of ebony wood carved with powers and cartouches in silver. The front cartouche reads: Juan de Mesa +1627.
On the back, a cartouche that reads: Christ in boxwood carved by the sculptor Juan de Mesa (+1627). Ebony and silver cross.
*Juan de Mesa y Velasco (1583-1627). He was the most outstanding of the disciples of the sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés (1568-1649). It is considered one of the prototypes of the image maker within Baroque sculpture. Of his crucified, the great drama and the work of anatomy stand out. Preserving several works where the aforementioned characteristics can be justified. Once his career was consolidated, he came to equal his teacher, influencing some of his later works. 31 x 30 cm the Christ. 75 x 34 cm the cross.
