"Holy Family with Saint John". Oil on canvas. It belongs to the Cuzco school of the 17th century. Diego Quispe Tito (1611-1681) is one of the most important artists of the Viceroyalty of Peru. He worked in San Sebastián, near Cuzco. Although his works reflect the influence of the engravings of the Platin (Antwerp) press, they also show the characteristic propensity to paint the local fauna and flora. Very few works by Diego Quispe are signed. The painting shows the episode narrated in the Apocryphal Gospel of Santiago of the meeting between Christ and his cousin Saint John upon returning from the flight to Egypt. The parrot painted in this work is a characteristic "signature" of the workshop. It has cherries on its legs, the traditional symbol of the fruit of Paradise. Under the parrot you can see red keels (nukchus), sacred flowers of the Inca queen (coya) metaphor of the Virgin Mary (Regina Coeli).
