Eduardo Chillida (1924–2002) is the most internationally renowned Spanish sculptor of the 20th century and the artist who showed that space can be worked like any other material, just like iron or stone. Born in San Sebastián, his work engages with the void, light, the horizon and weight, and is held by the world's leading museums, from MoMA in New York to the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Chillida's biography is a lesson in physical intuition. Before devoting himself to art, he was goalkeeper for Real Sociedad, until a serious injury ended his sporting career. He studied Architecture in Madrid, a background that explains the remarkable stability of his monumental pieces, and in 1948 he moved to Paris, where he made his first figurative sculptures in plaster and stone.
His true voice emerged when he returned to the Basque Country in the early 1950s and exchanged the classical tradition for forged iron at the forge in Hernani. In 1958 he won the International Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale, and over his lifetime he received honours such as the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts (1987). Public works such as the Comb of the Wind in San Sebastián and the Eulogy of the Horizon in Gijón are part of Spain's cultural landscape. His great unfinished project, hollowing out the interior of Mount Tindaya (Fuerteventura) to create a space of light and horizon, sums up his ambition to sculpt the void itself. His legacy is preserved at Chillida Leku, the museum he created in Hernani.

They require special framing that respects the slack of the threads and constant protection from light.
Chillida was an exceptional printmaker. His signed and numbered prints are not reproductions of his sculpture but explorations of space in two dimensions, often on heavyweight papers. This is the segment with the highest turnover at auction and an excellent entry point to his work. They should be distinguished from posters and invitations with a signature printed in the plate, which are of more modest value.
