(San Sebastián, 1924 - San Sebastián, 2002)
Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) is not only the most internationally renowned Spanish sculptor of the 20th century; he is the artist who taught the world that space is a medium as moldable as iron. At Durán Arte y Subastas, we manage his legacy with the rigor required for works featured in the world’s leading museums, from the MoMA to the Reina Sofía.
Chillida’s biography is a masterclass in physical intuition. Born in San Sebastián, his initial path was not the chisel, but the goalposts of Real Sociedad. A serious injury cut his athletic career short, but his need to "understand the area" and anticipate the movement of the void transitioned into his art.
After leaving his Architecture studies in Madrid—a technical foundation that explains the remarkable stability of his monumental pieces—he moved to Paris in 1948. However, his true voice emerged upon returning to the Basque Country. In the forge of Hernani, he traded classical marble for wrought iron, reviving the ancestral traditions of his homeland to create an absolute avant-garde language.
For a collector or auction investor, it is vital to distinguish the different materializations of Chillida’s thought. His market is built upon four fundamental pillars:
These are Chillida’s most sought-after works. His pieces often resemble claws attempting to "capture" the air. The use of Corten steel (which develops a protective rust patina) allowed his works to dialogue with the outdoors, such as the iconic Comb of the Wind. In the auction room, small-format iron sculptures are highly competitive international pieces.
One of his most revolutionary contributions. Chillida decided to eliminate glue: the Gravitaciones are reliefs made of handmade papers layered and joined by threads, allowing air to circulate between the layers. These are works of extreme delicacy where shadow becomes part of the composition.
While iron embraces the void, alabaster seeks light. Chillida carved this translucent material to allow luminosity to penetrate the block. Conversely, his concrete works (such as Eulogy to the Horizon) demonstrate his ability to create spiritual architecture on an urban scale.
Chillida was a master printmaker. His etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts are not mere reproductions, but spatial explorations in two dimensions. He used heavy-weight papers (such as handmade Eskulan paper) that allow the dense black ink to create a unique visual relief.
Investing in Eduardo Chillida means entering a consolidated market with global demand. As a leading auction house in Madrid with decades of experience, Durán ensures maximum transparency in every transaction:
• Records and Stability: Chillida’s works maintain constant revaluation, serving as a "safe-haven asset" in the contemporary art market.
• Catalogue Raisonné: Chillida’s oeuvre is meticulously documented, primarily in the Van der Koelen catalogues raisonnés. At Durán, we verify every lot against official sources to guarantee authenticity.
• The Tindaya Project and Chillida-Leku: The mystique surrounding his museum in Hernani has revitalized interest among a new generation of international collectors.
• Why is provenance vital for a Chillida work? Given his high market valuation, a clear ownership history is essential. At Durán, we provide full documentation regarding the traceability of the piece.
• How should Gravitaciones be preserved? As suspended paper, they require specialized framing that respects the "slack" of the threads and provides UV protection to preserve the natural tone of the paper.
• Looking to sell a work by Chillida? As specialists in art auctions in Madrid, we position your work before top-tier global collectors, guaranteeing a professional valuation based on the latest market results.
