(1963 - 1981)
Equipo Crónica (1964–1981), the collective founded in Valencia by Manolo Valdés, Rafael Solbes and Juan Antonio Toledo, is one of the boldest and most highly valued chapters of European Pop and critical realism. Its language, based on quotations from the great Spanish masters and political critique filtered through mass-media aesthetics, shaped the renewal of Spanish art in the final years of the dictatorship. At Durán Arte y Subastas, we appraise and catalogue its work with the utmost expert rigour.
Born out of the Estampa Popular movement in Valencia, Equipo Crónica set out to bring art closer to the public and break with the subjectivism of Informalism. After Toledo's early departure, the duo of Rafael Solbes and Manolo Valdés developed a collective working method in which individual authorship was subordinated to the message.
Using flat colours, screenprinting and devices borrowed from comics and the press, the collective placed Velázquez, Goya and El Greco in settings from 20th-century Spain. Series such as La recuperación, Policía y cultura and the Serie Negra became biting allegories of censorship and power. The group disbanded in 1981 after the death of Rafael Solbes.
Equipo Crónica's market is liquid and well defined. These are its keys:
The High-Valuation Core: Their acrylics on canvas from the 1960s and 1970s, reinterpreting works such as Las Meninas in a Pop key, are the most highly valued pieces. The narrative strength of the series and the crispness of the colour determine the price.
Conservation: On flat colour surfaces, any abrasion or loss is highly visible. The absence of flaking, abrasions and retouching is key to achieving a good price.
True to their aim of taking art to the street, they produced multiples and editioned three-dimensional pieces that bring their characters into volume and are very well received by collectors.
Their limited-edition screenprints and portfolios, signed and numbered, stand out for the intensity of their inks and are a very accessible entry point to Spanish art of the period.
As an auction house in Madrid with long experience in 20th-century Spanish art, Durán provides the highest guarantees:
• Catalogue Raisonné: We compare each work against the Equipo Crónica catalogue raisonné by Michèle Dalmace, published by IVAM, the leading reference on the collective.
• Verification of Provenance: We trace the history of each piece, including labels from historic galleries such as Val i 30 in Valencia.
• How did Equipo Crónica sign its works? The signature was collective: "Equipo Crónica". In prints, the pencil signature and numbering identify impressions from the legitimate edition.
• How does Equipo Crónica relate to Manolo Valdés's later work? Valdés was one of its founders. After the group disbanded he began a solo career with his own language, so the two bodies of work should not be confused when cataloguing.
