Valencia, 1922 - Madrid, 2004
Amadeo Gabino was a Spanish sculptor, painter, and engraver whose work evolved from realism to geometric abstraction, influenced by constructivism and the use of industrial materials.
From an early age, Gabino was immersed in the artistic world, learning alongside his father, the sculptor Alfonso Gabino. In 1939, he began his studies at the Superior School of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, where he acquired a solid foundation in sculptural and pictorial techniques.
Throughout his career, Gabino traveled and trained in various European cities and New York, where he connected with avant-garde artists such as Alexander Calder, Jacques Lipchitz, and Alexander Archipenko. These influences led him to develop a sculptural language based on metallic geometric structures, focusing on precision and visual balance.
In 1956, he participated in the Venice Biennale, representing Spain, and in 1958, he contributed to the installation of pavilions for the Expo 58 in Brussels. His work began to stand out for its use of modular forms, creating sculptures that evoked the cosmos and technology, such as his pieces Saturn IV and Mars III.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Gabino consolidated his style, exploring the use of industrial metals and assembly techniques. His work was exhibited in major galleries and museums, such as Kunstverein Oerlinghausen in Germany and Casa del Cordón in Burgos.
His artistic legacy remains relevant, recognized as a key figure in the evolution of Spanish abstract sculpture.
