Antonio Lorenzo Carrión was a prominent Spanish avant-garde painter and engraver, trained at Madrid’s Central School of Fine Arts. He began his career in a realist style influenced by masters such as Francisco Esteve Botey and Daniel Vázquez Díaz, but soon shifted toward abstraction, creating utopian worlds filled with fantastic machines, echoing the spirit of Paul Klee.
From the 1950s, he fully embraced abstraction and became one of Spain’s early informalist artists. A self-taught printmaker, he reached remarkable technical mastery in this discipline. In 1972, he directed the Cuenca Group’s printmaking workshop—also known as Grupo 15—where he mentored artists like Rafael Canogar, Darío Villalba, and Andrés Nagel.
He was a founding member and the first curator of the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca, alongside figures such as Fernando Zóbel, Gerardo Rueda, Eusebio Sempere, and Antonio Saura. His graphic work stood out for its refinement and innovation, with plates using up to twenty colors. In 1992, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum dedicated a major retrospective to his printmaking.
Internationally, he represented Spain at the Venice Biennales of 1964, 1966, and 1972, as well as at the New York World’s Fair. In 2024, the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español in Cuenca honored him with the exhibition “Antonio Lorenzo. Portrait of a Painter with Ideas,” showcasing paintings, sculptures, and his celebrated graphic suite Ten Variations on a Theme.
Antonio Lorenzo passed away in Madrid in 2009. His legacy places him among the key figures of 20th-century Spanish abstract art, with a body of work that combines imagination, technique, and modernity.
