1946, Seville, Spain
Manolo Quejido is a Spanish painter and graphic artist, recognized for his contribution to the Nueva Figuración Madrileña, an artistic movement that emerged in the late 1970s. His work is characterized by a vibrant exploration of color, figuration, and the interaction between art and society. Throughout his career, he has experimented with various visual languages, from abstract expressionism to pop art and neo-expressionism.
Quejido moved to Madrid in 1964, where he began his artistic career. During the 1970s, his work was influenced by political commitment and artistic experimentation, becoming part of the group of artists exhibiting at the Buades Gallery in Madrid. During this period, he explored concrete poetry and the social function of art, as well as participating in the Seminar on Automatic Generation of Plastic Forms at the University of Madrid's Computing Center.
In the 1980s and 1990s, his work evolved towards a more expressive and colorful painting style, influenced by pop art and artists such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Ronald Kitaj. His style is characterized by vibrant brushstrokes and an ironic and provocative attitude, contrasting with the dark informalism of previous decades.
His work has been exhibited in major institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, and the IVAM in Valencia. Additionally, his work is part of prestigious collections such as the Fundación “la Caixa” and the Marugame Hirai Museum in Japan.
Manolo Quejido remains a key figure in contemporary Spanish art, with a career marked by innovation and the exploration of new visual languages. His legacy continues to inspire artists and critics worldwide.
