Graphic art was born in the 15th century with the invention of the printing press. The engraving of images on metal plates allowed the reproduction in limited numbers. These works initially formed part of literary texts and it was not until the 16th century that this technique was used to engrave works based on drawings and paintings. The diffusion of maps, religious, botanical, military images, and so on, allowed a greater knowledge to different social classes and are documents that allow us to know the past. In the twentieth century there has been a strong development and avant-garde movements that try to integrate art into society through the realization of serial work with a limited number of works. The techniques used varied widely. The best known are engraving, lithography, serigraphy and woodcut. Sometimes prints have not had the recognition they deserve due to the lack of knowledge of the process. The artist intervenes directly in the work through the design and execution on the support used (metal, stone, wood, and so on.), and in many cases makes direct interventions on the finished work, which makes them exclusive pieces. In Durán Arte y Subastas' in-person auction, online store and online auction, you will find antique maps, engravings, posters, etc. and graphic works from the 20th and 21st century by artists such as Chillida, Tàpies, Canogar, Picasso, Palazuelo, César Paternosto, Manolo Valdés, Joseph Kosuth, among others.
