"San Francisco". Oil on canvas. Relined.
Antonio Arias Fernández stands out as a painter of the Madrid school of the 17th century. Known for his large religious compositions. He also carried out several commissions for the decoration of the Golden Room of the Royal Alcázar, of which the portrait of Carlos V and Felipe II is preserved. From 1645 he had his own workshop, giving rise to numerous religious commissions.
His compositions stand out for having a monumental character and great attention to the description of the cloths in an almost sculptural way. This work is directly related to the Panel of San Francisco in the Collegiate Church of Pastrana cataloged by D. Angulo and AE Sánchez; both the structure of the composition and the description of the figures coincide in both works.
