ALPERI, VÍCTOR. "Asturian painters". Banco Herrero, Oviedo 1954
Provenance: Family of the artist
Carolina del Castillo is, together with Julia Alcayde, a precursor of Asturian female painting. Born into a bourgeois family, she took refuge in painting already in her maturity, after the death of two of her children. It was formed, in a first stage, with the painter José Nicolau Huguet and occupied a prominent place in the Asturian artistic panorama of the first third of the 20th century. In 1914 the family moved to live in Madrid where he met and worked with Cecilio Pla. Carolina's works from this second stage reflect the influence of her teacher. They are paintings of great chromatic richness, impressionist technique, application of paint directly using the tubes and impetuous brushwork.
Considered one of the most important painters of the moment, she was a vocational artist who did not want to sell her paintings, so it is rare to find her works in the market.
It is represented in the collections of the Jovellanos Museum in Gijón, the Gijón City Council, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias in Oviedo and the University of Oviedo. 83x98
