(Don Quixote by Ibarra) CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de.- "THE INGENIOUS HIDALGO DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA... New edition corrected by the Royal Spanish Academy" In Madrid: by D. Joaquín Ibarra, 1780. Folio, full leather with triple fillet on the planes. Irons and nerves on the spine. Gilt cuts. 4 vols. Light mottling on some pages. Wide margins. Small tampon seal on port. Magnificent edition and superior in artistic beauty to all those that had been made until then in Spain and abroad. The plates were drawn by A. Carnicero, J. del Castillo, J. Brunete, B. Barranco, P. Arnal, G. Gil and G. Ferro. Copper engravings by F. Selma, M. L. Carmona, G. A. Gil, P. Moles, J. Fabregat, J. Ballester, J. de la Cruz, F. Montanery and J. Barceló; that is, the best artists of the time. The portrait is a copy of the one given by the Count of Aguila to the Royal Academy, and the map is the work of Tomás López. The text was modeled on the edition then considered the first, that is, the second by Cuesta, 1605, which he compared with others and modified in some passages. The Life of Cervantes and the Analysis of Don Quixote are by Vicente de los Rios, documented works that far surpass anything previously published on the same subject. The paper was manufactured in Catalonia, and new types were cast. The title was changed, and the work was divided into two parts, believing in every way to reflect Cervantes' ideals. Bookplate by Gustavo Gili. 1,600 copies were printed. A work appreciated by lovers of beautiful books.
