17th C. Spanish School. Antonio Solis

"Portrait of Antonio de Solis y Rivadeneyra". Oil on canvas. Relined.

Antonio de Solís y Rivadeneyra (Alcalá de Henares, 1610 - Madrid, 1686). He was the Major Chronicler of the Indies, historian, playwright, prose writer and poet.

Recognized for being the author of "History of the Conquest of Mexico, population and progress of North America". Work known by the name of "New Spain" (1684) and based on the letters written by Hernán Cortés, the works of López de Gómara and Bernal Díaz del Castillo.

This story narrates the events of Hernán Cortés as well as those of contemporary characters and officials exalting both the Aztec leaders and the indigenous culture.

As can be seen in the image, the painting, until today unknown, could have served as a model for the subsequent engraving. Used as frontispiece in the Paris edition by Baudry, 1845. The sitter appears dressed in a black doublet and carrying a book as a symbol of his work as a chronicler. 72.5 x 49cm
