Lot: 711
French School, 18th century. Thetis and Achilles

"Tetis entregando las armas a Aquiles". Oil on canvas. Inventory labels and inscriptions on the back.

Restorations at the bottom left.

Provenance:

- Christies's, Anonymous Sale, London. 8 March 1963.

- Private collection.

The painting captures a moment of mythological fervour and tragic heroism, as if the XVIIIth Book of the Iliad had been immortalised on canvas. In the centre, Thetis, mother of Achilles, holds out in her hands the weapons forged by Hephaestus. The golden light from the weapons illuminates her face, which combines pride and maternal concern, in an expression of dignity inspired by David's heroes.

Thetis wears a tunic with almost marble folds, evoking classical idealisation. Her figure appears in perfect balance, as if time had stopped, representing the union between maternal love and divine duty. This order and proportion recall David's solemn and heroic style. 121 x 98 cm
