"Última Cena con el Santo Cáliz de Valencia". Valencian School S. XVI. Circa 1550. The Macip family.
Oil on panel.
This important panel, belonging to a private collection, reveals the mutual influence between Vicente Macip and Juan de Juanes in the faces, hands and clothing. Father and son jointly made important altarpieces and their workshop gained prestige for its Italianate Renaissance modernity.
The chalice on the table is the one that has been kept, since the 15th century, in the cathedral of Valencia, considered by tradition to be the authentic glass used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.
Very few paintings from the 16th century are preserved representing this scene with the Holy Grail of Valencia.
The character of Judas stands out in the foreground in the composition with the yellow tunic, a symbol of envy, from which it can be deduced that it represents the moment in which Jesus addresses the apostles and tells them "one of you will betray". The pitcher and basin on the right of the scene symbolize the washing of the feet prior to the Supper.
Technically, the bold perspective composition of the table stands out instead of the classic frontal point of view.
Good state of conservation.
Exhibitions: he participated in "Els camins del Grail". Almudín Museum (Valencia), 2015. 103 x 99 cm
