"Penitent Magdalene". Sculpture made of carved and polychrome wood, glued, stuccoed and polychrome twill, and natural and glass inserts.
Sculpture showing the Penitent Mary Magdalene, seated on a rock. Dressed in an intertwined esparto tunic, typical of iconography, and over this a cloak with a floral print. Her hair is long and loose.
Her face, with an expression of regret and her gaze forward. Mouth ajar that slightly reveals the teeth. In the usual way of the sculptor, the image has one of the arms raised, and the other at chest height, in this case carrying a silver cross.
On a wooden base covered with embossed and chiseled silver sheets by hand. Decorated with scrolls and braces in the Baroque manner. On the front, a coat of arms, and below it, a sign that reads "LA MAGDALENA. ORIGINAL WORK BY D. FRANCISCO SALCILLO YEAR 1763 COMMISSIONED BY CASA RIQUELME". The cross and the base, most likely, from a slightly later period, with three hallmarks, a tower, an cross, and a profile, which may correspond to Madrid or Valladolid Corte, Ff. S. XVIII. Very minor faults in specific areas.
Reproduced in the exhibition catalogue: Salzillo, Witness of a Century.
- AA.VV, Salzillo, Witness of a Century, Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, 2007, p. 484.
- Origin: Spanish private collection. 60 cm high sculpture. 28 cm high the base.
