Jan Anthonisz van Ravensteyn. man portrait

"gentleman portrait". Oil on table. Signed with anagram and dated (Anno 1635) in the lower left corner.

Although it is not known with certainty who van Ravesteyn''s teachers were, it is common to point to the artists Jacob Van Delff and Michiel Jansz van Mieren from Delft, where he stayed several times in 1597. From 1598 until his death he lived in The Hague where He was a member of the San Lucas Guild.

His specialty was portraits of the gentry and he would become a chamber painter for the House of Orange-Nassau.

Jan Anthoniz van Ravensteyn belonged to a family of artists. His brothers Anthonis and Arnold also worked as portrait painters in The Hague using a similar style to him. He was the teacher of prominent painters such as Abrahamsz van Dirck, Barthous Leendert, Johannes Harmens Borsman, Aelbert Dircksz, Pieter Craen Coeppier, etc. 85x115cm
