Magnificent sketch for the work "El Palleter declaring war on Napoleon", known as "El grito del Palleter" with which Sorolla obtained the Pensionado de Pintura position at the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome in 1884, granted by the Provincial Council of Valencia.

This is the only known study of the work that is currently preserved in the Palau de la Generalitat and in which the grid used by the painter can be appreciated, a characteristic hardly present in the work of the Valencian artist.

The work represents the moment in which Valencia gave its support to King Ferdinand VII, when Vicent Doménech, a farmer who sold straws to make fire, raised his voice to express the feelings of the majority of the Valencian people before the news of the capitulations of Bayonne and the ineffectiveness of civil power. With the cry “Jo, Vicent Doménech, a poor palleter, I declared war on Napoleon. Visca Ferran VII i mort als traïdors!", the Valencian popular rebellion against the French occupation began on May 23, 1808.

The scene takes place in the then Plaza de les Panses (today Plaza de la Compañía), between the Lonja and the church of the Company.
