José Taviel de Andrade. Once escenas filipinas

Eleven oil paintings on shells. Signed. Spanish military man in the last years of Spanish rule in the Philippines and a painter and art teacher at the Escuela Superior de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado. He started as a cadet in Andalusia in 1873. He served several military tours in the Spanish possessions in North Africa. Assigned back to Spain he served in the war against the Carlists. Because of this he was promoted to lieutenant in 1876. In 1880 at the age of 23 Taviel de Andrade was assigned to the Philippines. He served in the artillery unit, first in the capital and later in the Visayas Islands. Three years later he participated in Jolo in a pacification campaign. He was decorated and in 1885 he joined the engineering corps in Manila. He was eventually reassigned to the 8th Company of the Civil Guard stationed in Calamba, Laguna, where his place in history was sealed with his assignment as the personal custodian of Jose Rizal when the writer arrived there on August 5, 1887. Governor-General Emilio Terrero y Pertinat saw fit to have the writer of "Noli me Tangere" remain under the escort of a Spanish officer for a few weeks after his arrival. They quickly struck up a friendship as the young officer Taviel was a cultured man who spoke French and German, languages that Rizal would surely have enjoyed practicing. When Taviel finished his service Rizal presented him with a translation of "Sucesos de Morga" and wrote letters that demonstrate their friendship. In 1888 Taviel de Andrade briefly returned to Spain. Three years later, he returned to the Philippines with the rank of captain to assist in the pacification campaign in Mindanao and Jolo. Due to the success of his campaigns at Lake Lanao, Malabang, Iligan and Linamon, he was appointed commander of infantry. After the execution of Rizal in 1896, Taviel de Andrade was appointed politico-military governor of Zamboanga. The following year he was assigned to Cuba to assist in the war against the U.S. After the defeat of Spain he returned to Spain where he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1906.
