Los Carpinteros was a collective of Cuban artists created in 1992, although it was not until 1994 when they adopted the name by which they are known today. This group of artists is made up of Marco Castillo, Dagoberto Rodríguez and Alexandre Arrechea (who left the collective in June 2003). After participating in numerous exhibitions and fairs, they decided to separate in 2018.
When they began their journey, they wanted to get closer to the old guilds and the way of working that artisans had in their different trades, in which individual authorship was blurred in front of to the collective.
They have worked on all kinds of disciplines and supports; However, his artistic production was characterized, above all, by the combination of elements such as sculpture, architecture and design from a perspective that combined conceptualism, formalism and activism to delve into and explore the intersection between art, politics and society of their native country.
Los Carpinteros took the physical and real world as the starting point of their work and generated, from constructions and various architectural elements, unreal spaces that oscillated between practicality and uselessness. Their ambivalent character unified difficulty and enjoyment in their pieces, which has contributed to their being a great reference for many current artists.
In most of their pieces we are not faced with a physical change of the object in question, but rather Rather, in the face of a decontextualization of it, to give it a (non) meaning, hence the nature of the name of this group of artists, Los Carpinteros, a trade that essentially seeks the construction of useful and functional objects. 57 x 80cm
