Rafael Enriquez y Villanueva was the first director of the University of the School of Fine Arts of the Philippines. He was a descendant of the Sequera family, of Granada origin, and its great patriarch Bernardo de Sequera y Columbus of Portugal. He was educated at the Ateneo Municipal and continued his studies at the Academy of Drawing and Painting under the direction of Agustin Saez.
In 1869 he moved to Spain to study law at the Central University of Madrid and after graduating he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. After achieving renown as a painter in Spain, he moved to Paris in 1879 and to London in 1887 where he painted his masterpiece "The Death of Don Simon de Anda" which was exhibited at the General Exposition of the Philippines in 1887.
He returned to the Philippines shortly before the revolution, being a personal witness to the execution of Jose Rizal in Bagumbayan. He was fluent in Tagalog and became one of the champions of the Philippine cause, associating with other supporters such as his friend Antonio Maria Regidor. He maintained a close relationship with the American painter John Singer Sargent. 114 x 163 cm
