"The Adoration of the Magi". Triptych. Oil on table.
On the central panel, the Virgin Mary with the Child in her arms receives the gifts of gold and incense from the Kings Gaspar and Melchor who offer their presents uncovered and in a devout attitude while the Child plays with the cup. In the background you can see the characteristic architecture of Van Aelst with two soldiers conversing in the background, groups of figures on the road and a flock of birds that continues in the panel on the left.
The right panel shows an elderly Saint Joseph leaning on his staff with animals in the stable in the background and dilapidated architecture in the background.
The left table represents King Baltasar with rich clothing offering the container of myrrh. Behind him an architectural background, birds in the sky and characters on the road.
The theme of the Adoration of the Kings was one of the favorite subjects of the painters of Antwerp since it allowed them to represent exotic characters and exuberant riches. The presents that arrived from distant lands symbolized the importance of foreign trade for the new and important group of patrons that constituted the merchants of Antwerp.
Pieter Coecke van Aelst was a painter, engraver, draughtsman and publisher. According to Van Malder, he studies with Bernard van Orley in Brussels. Pieter Coecke inherits an important workshop with abundant production. One of his daughters will be the wife of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. His activity was not limited to directing the workshop and the execution of paintings, he also made designs for stained glass windows and tapestries and became interested in architecture. He translated Vitruvio and Sebastiano Serlio. His style is considered as an Antwerp mannerist and close to the last works of Raphael, evolving towards a language close to the Romanists. Central panel: 56.5 x 87.5 cm; Side boards: 24 x 89 cm
