Gobelin Workshops 18th C Queen Esther

Important French tapestry made of wool. It shows the passage of the coronation of Queen Esther by King Ahasuerus of Persia, according to Book II of Esther in the Old Testament. The scene is framed in classic architecture of Venetian influence where a large number of richly dressed characters are arranged. Border possibly cut out, which means that it does not preserve signatures or anagrams.

France, Gobelin Workshops, circa 1737.

This tapestry is linked to the series that Jean Fraçoise de Troy created in 1735, composed of seven passages. Given the success of the works, in 1737 fifteen new series were commissioned from the Gobelin Workshops of Adrau, the tapestry being presented at auction being the result of the second production, possibly by Pierre Françoise Cozette. A similar piece is located in the Audience Chamber of Windsor Palace.

*Attached for consultation is a report on the piece issued by Lorenzo Ramos Paul Avilés Casco, Executive Director of the Generalísimo Franco Foundation.
