Tapestry after Antoine Coypel Don Quixote c. 1740

"Despedida de Don Quijote a Sancho en Barataria". "Don Quixote's Farewell to Sancho in Barataria" (Second Part. Chapter XLII.)

Important Flemish tapestry, 18th century. Made of wool and silk, after the work of Charles Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), who illustrated 28 episodes from Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. Based on Coypel's pictorial work, Flemish workshops and Gobelins brought the different scenes to the loom.

Among the Flemish workshops, this production is related to some manufactures, among them that of Peter van den Hecke (1680-1752), who around 1730-1745 produced several series of eight tapestries, six of them following Coypel's work. Several similar examples are preserved in the Frick Collection and one of the same theme is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. 270 x 380 cm
