In the 1990s, Xu Bing developed the design of a new type of writing in English. The words look like Chinese characters, but are actually recognizable and legible English words.
The first years in the formation of Xu Bing are framed in the time of Mao Zedong. In 1975 he was sent to the countryside as part of the "re-education" policy. In 1977 he returned to Beijing and enrolled in the China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). He obtained his degree in 1987. His work was considered a criticism of the Chinese government. Political pressures and artistic restrictions mean that, after the Tiananmen protests, he leaves for the United States. He returns to Beijing in 2008 when he is appointed vice president of CAFA. He currently lives and works in New York and Beijing.
His work has been exhibited in the most important museums in the world such as the MOMA, the MET and the Guggenheim in New York, the Victoria & Albert and the British Museum in London, the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum in Madrid, the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona and has Participated in international exhibitions and biennials. 42x62cm
