"Portrait of Alfredo Cabello Gomez-Acebo". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated (29) in the lower left corner.
Related to painters of the Paris school such as Pablo Picasso, Francisco Bores, Manuel Ángeles Ortiz,...etc., Alfonso Ponce de León began his artistic career at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he had as companions Maruja Mallo, Salvador Dalí, or his wife, Margarita Manso.
With enormous expressiveness, this portrait of Alfredo Cabello Gómez-Acebo is carefully surrounded by a flat and abstract background that envelops the figure, a resource that can also be appreciated in other works by the artist such as the portrait of Guadalupe Cabello. Both were made in 1929, the year in which Alfonso Ponce de León participated in the Salón de los Independientes with an exhibition of his painting. This is a work of great interest that was not included in the catalog of the exhibition held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2001.
Alfredo Cabello Gómez-Acebo, the artist''s cousin, was a prominent member of of the Unified Socialist Youth and maintained a close relationship with Santiago Carrillo. At the end of the Civil War, he was in France and Chile, returning shortly after to lead the guerrillas in Andalusia. Alfredo Cabello Gómez-Acebo was sentenced to death and shot in Malaga in March 1948. 53 x 45.5cm
