"Necklace". IMPORTANT HISTORICAL JEWEL PAINTED BY FRANCISCO DE GOYA.
Silver necklace formed by a rivière of old-cut diamonds mounted on prongs. Tab closure with safety clasp. Large piece.
Total weight of diamonds: 20 cts. approx.
This piece belonged to Doña Manuela Isidra Téllez-Girón y Alonso de Pimentel (1793-1838), youngest daughter of the Dukes of Osuna and sister of the Marquise of Santa Cruz, also portrayed by Goya. In 1813 she married Don Ángel María de Carvajal y Fernández de Córdoba y Gonzaga (1793-1839), future VIII Duke of Abrantes (1816). Like the rest of his siblings, he received an enlightened education from his family and among his hobbies were music and singing, as Goya reveals in his portrait through the musical score. It was the last portrait Goya painted of an aristocratic lady, which in this case was paid for by the mother, the Duchess of Osuna, who had protected the artist since the mid-1780s.
The necklace worn by the Duchess of Abrantes in Goya''s portrait is the present piece.
Origin: direct descendants of the Osuna-Abrantes family.
