"Magnificent presentation sword as a gift from the President of Iraq to General de Gaulle". Extraordinary presentation sword made in yellow gold. Iraq, circa 1969. Gift of the President of Iraq to General Charles de Gaulle. Curved blade, with octagonal handle and curved pommel adorned with polychrome enamel flowers. Scabbard decorated with floral motifs and spiral ornaments flanked by flower garlands. Two gallons on both sides with enameled floral decoration. Two rings in the center of the scabbard. Scallop-shaped ornaments at the beginning of the scabbard. On both sides a medallion with Arabic characters. The decoration is based on Persian models from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Presentation swords of this type have been made since the 19th century throughout the Middle East. They were profusely decorated pieces in their scabbard and hilt to which an old Damascus steel blade was added. Two copies are preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum that were delivered to Lord Athlone in 1928 by King Ibn-Saud and Sheikh Isa of Bahrain respectively.
On the cartouches on each side the inscription reads: "ila al''jiniral shrl chikul ma''a Tahiyyah was Tagdir ra''is al-Jumhuriyya al-iraqiyya. 1 haziron 1969". To General Charles de Gaulle with greetings and appreciation, Ahmad Hasan al-Bakr, President of the Republic of Iraq, June 1, 1969.
On the scabbard inscribed: the gold work of Khalil Mal Allah.
