Francisco Manuel Oller y Cestero (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1833-1917), was one of the most outstanding figures of Caribbean impressionism. He began his studies in San Juan and at the age of 18 he traveled to Madrid to continue his training at the Royal Academy of San Fernando under the tutelage of Federico de Madrazo.
In 1858 he continued his studies at the Louvre Museum and frequented the workshops of Camile Pissarro and Gustave Courbet. A year later, his works were contemplated together with those of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Claude Monet, which established the artist as a Hispanic reference in the Parisian scene at the end of the century.
This work is a portrait of a Puerto Rican jíbara, a clear example of the painter''s sociological interest in Caribbean customs, culture and miscegenation. The figure is represented seated, directing her gaze towards the outside of the scene.
In 2015 his work was included in the great retrospective exhibition "Impressionism and the Caribbean: Francisco Oller and his transatlantic world" held at the Brooklyn Museum. Today, his work is part of the collections of the Musé d''Orsay, Museo de Arte Ponce or the Museum of History, Anthropology and Art of the University of Puerto Rico, among others. 12.5" x 8"
