In this series, Goya performs a critical satire on the vices and absurdities of human conduct. Simplifying the series, they can be grouped around four major themes: the first deals with the deception of relationships between a man and a woman; the second is a satire on rudeness and ignorance, false beliefs and superstitions; the third condemns the vices of society, such as gluttony, laziness, lust or greed; and the fourth is a criticism of abuses of power. Los Caprichos became the symbol of the Goyesco and conveyed a new way of facing reality, presenting it closer and more expressive, with a fresher language, which the artists of the s would echo.
