An Ibia Ceremonial Axe, PR Congo

Ibia ceremonial axe. Laali, People''s Republic of the Congo. Wood, iron, brass thread and metal studs. 43 x 42 x 7cm. Piece with base (not included in measurements).

Judging by the appearance of this piece, we might think that we are dealing with a conventional weapon. However, when observed carefully, its careful workmanship and its dramatized proportions denote a concern that goes beyond its possible functionality to turn it into a symbol of sovereignty. In the hands of the traditional chief emanates the power necessary to do justice and guarantee peace within the small African communities. The ax gives the man who holds it, the ritual, the sacred character, since he acts as a mediator or interpreter of a superior being.

Two similar pieces in the following publications:

"Chasseurs et Guerriers". Cat. Exp. 1998. Paris: Musée Dapper, 1998. P. 208.

"De Fer et de Fierté: Armes Blanches d''Afrique Noire du Musée Barbier-Mueller". 2003. P. 213,. 43 x 42 x 7cm
