"Study for the snake charmer". Oil on table.
A certificate issued by Dr. Carlos González López and Ms. Montserrat Martí Ayxela issued in March 2001 is attached (Report No. 040301).
In the catalog raisonné of the painter published in 1989, both experts considered that this panel would have been painted by Fortuny in Rome when he returned from Spain in 1868. Fortuny had married Cecilia de Madrazo in Madrid in 1867 where he stayed until May of the same year. year. He traveled to Rome in the company of his brothers-in-law Isabel and Ricardo de Madrazo, staying a few days in June in Marseille where they visited the zoo taking notes on various animals, including some snakes that he painted on that date and in subsequent years. Two versions of the "Snake Charmer" have been preserved. The first, dated 1869, painted in oil on canvas measuring 58.5 x 124.5 cm, was acquired by the American collector AT Stewart, currently exhibited at The Walters Gallery (Ref.37.117-980). The subject achieved great success among collectors, appearing at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1878, in the homage paid to it posthumously, organized by Raimundo de Madrazo and Martín Rico, as one of Fortuny''s masterpieces. The second version, dated 1870, painted in oil on canvas measuring 60 x 135 cm. It was part of the Fontagut-Gargollo collection in Paris and after 1877 of the André collection, later moving to the Musée L''Ermitage in Saint Petersburg, where it is currently located.
When delving into the iconographic study, Dr. González and Doña Montserrat Martí consider that it could be a sketch painted from life in Africa and that he later developed in Rome. Other sketches of oriental subjects are known that the painter used in later stages, such as the sketch of the first version of the same subject painted in his studio in Vigna Julia, a palace located in Via Flamina, Rome. It could be considered as a first impression in which Fortuny did not represent the snake. The model that appears in this issue was called Legrain and worked for the French painter Henri Regnault. Fortuny used to go regularly to the French Academy located in Via Medici where he was well received by the president of the entity and by his friends Regnault, Baron D''Epinay and Adelaide D''Affry, Duchess of Colonna. 10.5 x 18.5cm
