marble mercury. Rome S. I/II AD

White marble statue, Rome, 1st/2nd century AD Probably an infantile representation of the god Mercury/Hermes. The figure appears standing, dressed in a tunic and leaning on a trunk located to his left. The right hand (missing) was in all probability taking the index to the mouth, and the left hand holding the clothes.

Restoration in fracture lines in both legs at knee height, in the ankle of the right foot and in the log. Small restorations also on the edges of some mantle folds. Excellent state of conservation.

An identical statue (which preserves the head) is known to be located in the Vatican Museums and is referenced in the work of Fréderic de Clarac: "Statues Antiques de l''Europe", 1847, (Plate 655, Engraving 1507).
