"descent". "descent". Oil on table. 37" x 48". Exceptional Andalusian table from the 15th century, probably the work of the excellent painter of the Sevillian School Pedro Sánchez, within the purest Gothic style. The center of the painting is occupied by the suspended figure of Christ taken down from the cross by a servant on a ladder that holds him with his right arm. José de Arimathea helps him by holding his legs. Next to him appears the figure of Nicodemus. Kneeling on the ground, Mary Magdalene embraces the cross. On the left side Saint John consoles the Virgin. The background is masterfully painted with a rich walled city on the left to which three winding paths lead along with various characters. Under the cross another city is represented and the right corner is dominated by a fortress.
BIBLIOGRAPHY: this work appears reproduced and cataloged in the book "A History of Spanish Painting" by Chandler Rathfon Post. Cambridge, 1958, vol. XII-part II. p.638 and plate 276. Although at first this work was considered to be from a French primitive, Post supports the theory that it is a work of Andalusian origin, possibly by Pedro Sánchez I. Some specialists cite two different artists with this name, one working in Toledo and the other in Seville, but it must be the same person who worked in both cities.
