Spanish royalty. divorce consultation

Spanish royalty. Divorce consultation.- Important documentary set containing the consultations made by the lawyer of the British Royal House, Sir Bernard Bircham, to a renowned Spanish lawyer, the Count of Albiz, on the possibility of divorce of Queen Victoria Eugenia from King Alfonso XIII according to Spanish laws. The documentary set preserves the original letters received by the Count of Albiz sent by Sir Bernard Bircham, typed, with letterhead and original signature, and copies of those sent by the Spanish lawyer, as well as notes on the subject and some newspaper clippings. The letters are dated between December 1934 and February 1935.

The beginning of the correspondence begins with a letter sent on December 12, 1934 to the Count of Albiz: "I am indebted to my friend Sir Horace Rumbold for your name and address and it is on his recommendation that I am writing to you. I am advising Queen Victoria Eugenie upon various matters of a very delicate character and there are legal questions arising upon which I am seeking advice as to the Laws of Spain... I can send to you and whether it would be safe to forward the documents, which would be extraordinarily confidential..."

In the letter dated December 21, 1934, in line with the confidentiality mentioned in the previous letter, Sir Bernard Bircham indicates to the Spanish lawyer: "I have read your letter to Her Majesty... for convenience, I will in this memorandum and in any correspondence which I may have with you refer to the King as Edward and the Queen as Carmen".

According to the meticulousness of the Spanish lawyer, the Count of Albiz, he keeps the notes he sends, in Spanish and English: "1- until the advent of the Republic, the lawsuits on nullity and divorce of canonical marriages (such as the one contracted by E . and C.) were decided by the ecclesiastical Courts and in accordance with the canons of the Catholic Church...".

An undated note: "B. in effect, has consulted with A. certain legal issues regarding divorce and separation, which were answered in writing in a very satisfactory manner, ruling out the possibility of such procedures. He has also spoken with Carmen. He has advised Likewise, the orientation that has been given to the matter lately should be rectified..."

Very important testimony, of a unique nature.
