Ethiopian 2nd Gondar School, 18th C. Crucifixion

Measurements: 141 x 100 cm

Mural painting from the "maqdas" of a missing church in the Gondar region. It depicts the Crucifixion in great detail. The use of a glued cotton cloth, the base for the application of colour, made the mural paintings fragile and exposed them to the danger of fire. This procedure, added to the ancestral custom of renewing the decoration of churches by discarding old cloth, meant that very few mural paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries are preserved. In fact, most of the known Ethiopian paintings date from the 19th and 20th centuries.

If we add to this that some of its specific features, among which the profusion of characters stands out, is exceptional, the conclusion is that it is a unique work in the style of the "second school of Gondar", second half of the century XVIII.
