FLAMENCO TAPESTRY. BRUSSELS, 16th century
Jakob Geubels I workshop. Circa 1580-1590.
Wool, silk and silver thread.
"Battle scene". On the left, a warrior equipped with a spear, leans over a figure on the ground. In the center of the composition, a woman on horseback, is carried victorious through the battle. The difficult-to-interpret theme belongs to a sequence from ancient history, perhaps it is an episode in the story of Alexander, a theme that was very much in vogue at the time this tapestry was woven.
It has a beautiful border with allegorical figures under niches on the sides, and fruits, birds, fauns, fantastic animals, vases and the figure of Ceres in the upper and lower area.
The tapestry shows great interest due to the quality of the cartoonist and the skill of the weaver, and in response to these qualities , it can be related to series of tapestries from different national and international collections.
Although there are no weaver or city marks, due to its technical and stylistic characteristics it could be a tapestry woven in the workshop of Jakob Geubels I, one of the most important workshops in Brussels a Ffs. of the 16th century. 337 x 437cm
