"Oxyrhynchus God". Votive bronze figure of a large Oxyrhynchus god, beautifully molded, with his characteristic long, downturned snout, crowned with a horned Ureo (upright cobra) diadem and sun disk. The Nile fish wears a wide beaded necklace (Usekh) around its gills, incised lines on the lower fin, and hollowed-out eyes for inlays. One of the eyes maintains the original white inlay. It is placed on a sled, supported by its tail and fins and which in turn is supported on a rectangular base. Bronze with green and reddish patina.
The ancient Egyptian city of Per-Medyed, in Greek Oxyrhynchus, 190 kilometers south of Cairo, owes its name to a type of river fish, a symbol of the town and its main goddess, Tueris. But this humble species had in its day, according to the mythology of the country of the pharaohs, the important role of having eaten the phallus of the god Osiris after it was dismembered during his confrontation with his brother Seth. In fact, thanks to that oxyrhynchus, the goddess Isis was able to recover the precious member and conceive Horus. The fish is also known as Mormyrus or Medjed (Elephant Fish).
Mineral concretions on the surface. Piece in excellent condition. It maintains one of the inlays in the eyes, which is rare in this type of piece. 13cm
