"Christ crucified". Wall painting applied to canvas. 144 x 94 cm. Damage to the canvas.
Work that belongs to the period of Ethiopian art called "second school of Gondar".
The use of a glued cotton cloth, the base for the application of color, made the mural paintings fragile and exposed them to the danger of fire. This procedure, added to the old custom of renewing the decoration of churches by discarding the old cloth, has meant that very few mural paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries are preserved. In fact, most of the known Ethiopian paintings date from the 19th and 20th centuries. If we add to this that some of its specific features, among which the profusion of characters stands out, is exceptional, we can assure that we are dealing with a unique work from this period.
As a reference, there is a work with similar characteristics in the British Museum in London, Inv. . 1893,11-12.1. This piece in question is, although later, more technically detailed and rich in its composition than the present one (since, in addition to the Crucifixion, it also represents the life of Bishop Selama). 144 x 94cm
