Crosses occupy a prominent position within the religious life of the Ethiopians, mainly as supreme symbols of their faith, but also as objects with a protective capacity. Large crosses accompany religious ceremonies, hand crosses are used to bless the faithful, while smaller crosses are worn around the neck as amulets. They are made of wood, metal, leather or stone, with a great variety of techniques, shapes and decorations. Clearly identifiable are the large metal crosses, originally produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries in the artistic center of Gondar, often decorated with engraved figurative motifs. 63.5cm tall
