Georges Mathieu. four illustrated poems

"four watercolor drawings". Four watercolor drawings illustrating poems from the book "Campanas de palo (poemas)" by Baldomero Isorna, published in Madrid, 1959. Signed and dated (60).

The book is illustrated with reproductions of works by Eduardo Vicente, Cristino Mallo and Asunción Isorna M. de la Riva and four original drawings by Georges Mathieu, the first of them on a double page.

The cover reads in handwriting by Georges Mathieu: "et exceptionellement illustrés par Georges Mathieu au Café El Greco (Gijón) en temoignage d''une grande sympathie avec la poesie espagnole. Madrid a 17 Nov 1960. Mathieu".

Georges Mathieu is one of the greatest exponents of French abstract expressionism. He innovated by incorporating calligraphic strokes into his compositions. He was the anticipator of artistic phenomena such as "happening" or "action painting". 22x16cm
