"Granada landscape". "Granada Landscape". Oil on canvas. 70 x 97.5 cm. Signed on the left side.
Picture painted in Granada, during his stay in this region in 1871.
When the Franco-Prussian war broke out in 1870, Martín Rico, possibly to avoid problems for his wife, Louise Fréderique Priet, who He was of Franco-Bavarian origin, left Paris and returned to Spain, to his homeland in San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
In January 1871 he went to Granada where Fortuny and Ricardo de Madrazo were already there. Other friends, all painters, will join the group later.
This presence in Granada is decisive for his career. He tested the watercolor technique with enormous success and extraordinary dedication, stimulated above all by the presence of Fortuny, and painted splendid oil paintings with a precious technique and magnificent framing where he exhibited a superb mastery of color and underlined the importance of the light values of the outdoor landscape. Paradigms of this exceptional period are this painting that we are presenting for auction and the famous work entitled "The Tower of the Ladies in the Alhambra in Granada", which belongs to the Prado Museum. These two paintings have enormous similarities in terms of technique, luminosity, chromaticism and composition. French critics, "bewitched" by the production of this "wonderful year", gave it the nickname of the "Daubigny ensoleillé". 70x97.5
