"Pasig river bank, Manila". Oil on table. Signed and dated (1876) in the lower right corner.
Origin: acquired by a family from Iloílo circa 1930 and by direct succession to its current owners.
Natural de Binondo Félix Resurrección Hidalgo studied Law at the University of Santo Tomás de Manila at the same time that he began his artistic career under the guidance of Agustín Sáez. Among his early works are views of landscapes around Manila, an example of which is the present lot. He painted works similar to the present one in the years 1875-1876 such as the "Study of the natural (1875)" of the Museo del Prado, also signed with red paint like the present table.
In 1879 he won one of the pensions paid by the Diputación from Manila to continue his training at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.
After traveling to Rome where he meets other Filipino artists such as Juan Luna or M. Zaragoza, he will settle permanently in Paris where he will stand out in painting historical, symbolic and landscape themes.
Félix Resurrección Hidalgo was a man of great literary culture to the point that José Rizal, when publishing his famous "Noli me tangere", sent him a copy and asked for his opinion. There is evidence that one of the opinions most valued by Rizal was precisely that of the artist from Binondo. 16x24cm
