Aphrodite Anadyomene bronze figure

Bronze Aphrodite Anadyomene. Rome. 1st - 2nd century AD C. Bronze representing the goddess Aphrodite with a cloak hugging her left leg. Arms raised brushing the sea foam from her hair. Wears a large headband. An eros on each side carrying a dove and a vessel. Both hold their cloak while standing on two dolphins with a central bearded mask. Good condition. Measurements: 13.3 cm high.

BIBLIOGRAPHY:

One version of the myth of the birth of Aphrodite refers to the castration of Uranus by his son Cronus who, by throwing his genitals into the sea, produced a foam from which Aphrodite emerged. The waves of the sea drove the goddess to the shores of Cyprus. Anadiomene means "she who arose from the waters".
