"Adoración de los Pastores". Oil on canvas. Signed: “Agustinus Gaçull P” Inscribed on the frame: “nº 15” and “5” on the frame. With label on the back inscribed in ink “nº 65”.
The work we present is an interesting contribution to the painter's production. There are not many works and details of the painter known. It is known that he was born in Valencia, he carried out his training in Rome, in the workshop of Carlo Maratta whose mark can be seen in this clearly Italianate composition. There is a known work signed “A Virgin giving the Rosary to Santo Domingo de Guzmán” in the Archbishop's Palace of Pamplona, a “Saint Adón and Senén” in the hermitage of Santa Lucía and a “Martyrdom of Santa Agnes” in the presbytery of the parish of San Andrés de Valencia. Also within his production on paper, three drawings have been located “An adoration of the Magi”, preserved in the Prado Museum, a preparatory drawing for a painting with the iconography of the Virgin communing from the hands of Christ preserved in a private collection and some decorative designs, configured with eagles and masks, kept in the Prado Museum; signed in different ways, respectively “Agustín Gasull Pictor Inv. et Pinxit”, “Augustinus Gaçull” and “Agustín Gasull fct. Vª” (See: Eduardo Morales Solchaga: “A new painting by Agustín Gasull: The Virgin giving the Rosary to Santo Domingo de Guzmán”, 2009, no. 90, pages 69-76). 109 x 155 cm
