"Project for the monument to Segismundo Moret in Cádiz". Oil on canvas. Titled in the upper left corner.
The monument to Segismundo Moret was inaugurated on November 28, 1909, in the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, then called "Plaza de Isabel II"
It is the posthumous work of the sculptor Agustín Querol y Subirats, and is Composed of a marble base, a shaft and a bronze statue.
Under the figure of Moret standing in front of an armchair, allegories of his qualities are sculpted on the shaft, in high relief, and can be read on all four sides:
PATRIOTISM. FREEDOM. LOYALTY. ELOQUENCE
On the face of the base there is a large cartouche, bevelled, with these bronzed letters:
CÁDIZ A MORET
On the back:
THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY POPULAR SUBSCRIPTION INITIATED BY THE HIS EXCELLENT CITY COUNCIL AT THE PROPOSAL FROM ITS PRESIDENT MAYOR EXCMO. AND ILMO. MR. CAYETANO DEL TORO AND QUARTIELLERS. YEAR 1906
Then it was completely surrounded by immense white marble steps and an exquisitely carved balustrade.
In the Municipal Historical Museum there is a reproduction of it, in its original version, made by Antonio Benítez (son), in wood and clay, donated by Cayetano del Toro.
When its place was taken in 1954 by the Monolith, Moret was located in a square in front of the Tobacco Factory, in the middle of a small garden. But it was also dismantled from here to make room for a majestic light source. In 1960 it was located at the exit of the port and the station, in front of Customs. Currently it can be seen again in its original location, the Plaza de San Juan de Dios. 116 x 161cm
