Lot: 115
Greek amphora clay 300 BC

Greek ceramic amphora, 300 BC that presents a globular body and short neck with double handle or vertical handles, as well as a flat base. The ornamental areas are reduced only to the upper part of the body with a decoration in dark tones for which black bitumen was possibly used. Historically, amphoras were used by the ancient Greeks to transport a considerable volume of perishable food in good condition from their places of origin to warehouses and containers. The most abundant are those intended to transport wine. Most of the amphoras were made of ceramic and their use was massive until the 7th century when containers made of leather or wood began to become popular.

Acquired from an old Israeli collection in 2006.
