After a first stage of training in his native Venezuela, he obtained the Silver Medal in the Great Exhibition of the Centenary of the birth of El Libertador Simón Bolívar in 1883. The government of President Joaquín Sinforiano de Jesús Crespo Torres grants him a pension in 1885 to study in Europe. He traveled to Paris in the company of Martín Tovar y Tovar where he received classes from Jean-Paul Laurens. Encouraged by his teacher, he obtained the highest recognition granted to a foreign artist from the Salon des Artistes Français in 1887, second class gold medal, with his work "L''Enfant Malade". He continued painting in Paris between 1885 and 1889 until he obtained a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. He returned to Venezuela to get married. He makes the illustrations for the novel "Hernani" by Victor Hugo. After another period in Paris, he returned to Venezuela in 1892 on the advice of his doctors suffering from tuberculosis. In Caracas he obtained great success as the fashion portraitist and official painter of President Crespo. The decoration of the Miraflores Palace begins. He died in 1898 leaving numerous unfinished works. 99.5 x 75.5cm
