Venetian cradle made of carved wood with traces of polychrome in the form of garlands.
Provenance:
- Christie''s, Milan. Importanti Arredi, Maioliche e Porcellane. Lot Nº 576 (05/19/1998)
- Private collection, Spain.
This boat-shaped cradle is a clear example of the Venetian decorative splendor of the late 18th century. The presence of neoclassical motifs in the decoration merges with rococo vestiges in the form of rocaille inlets and outlets. The very characteristic anchor-shaped feet and scallop-shaped handles of this “culla a dondolo” or rocking cradle, also show traces of golden polychrome on the profiles.
Lacquered with a green background, the entire upper surface is covered with painted vines topped with roses. On the lower central part of the main body two reserves emerge in relief in the shape of a laurel leaf garland.
Despite finding these examples in chairs, chests of drawers, cabinets or consoles, cribs have been a very little preserved element and extremely rare to find. A twin piece is today in the collection of Palazzo Ca''Rezzonico in Venice.
