Enthronement effigy.
Ethnicity: Bangwa.
Country: Cameroon.
In ancient times, Bangwa women shaved their heads wearing only the scars that covered the face and body as a dress, except for princesses of the royal family or mothers of twins, distinguished by the design of the hairstyle divided into two promontories.
Linked to political power, this statue is jealously preserved in the palace with the utmost secrecy. It constitutes one of the fundamental instruments of enthronement, and although we do not know its magical potential, we do know that only the king can touch it and offer the appropriate sacrifices, invoking its power in moments of crisis.
In matrilineal tribes the woman represents the founder of the clan. For this reason, its presence in the succession rites that consist of transmitting the sacred force to the supreme authority is essential.
To legitimize the new king, especially after fratricidal fights for the succession to the throne, the oldest woman in the kingdom intervenes. If the heir is young and inexperienced, "he will carry it on his shoulders to guide his steps and prevent him from stumbling." She will be his adviser and will place him on his back during certain phases of the enthronement ceremony. 114cm height
