Oinochoe from Cyprus with geometrical motifs

"Cypriot Oenochoe with Geometric Designs in Black, 1700-600 BC". These pieces, called enocoes or oinochoes, were used to serve wine from a larger vessel. For this reason they only had a handle that allowed them to introduce it and serve the wine. They are common in ceramic pastes, although typologically decorated much rarer. Typologically it is very beautiful, combining curved and sinuous lines with more geometric areas, its globular shape is accentuated by the concentric circles of its decoration.



Provenance: private collection of Theo L. Zinn collection, Surrey, Head of classical art in Westminster School (1952-1983), acquired in the English market between 1970-1995.
